SING KING KARAOKE - INCREASING REVENUE + REPEAT USERS

Summary

We designed and implemented a whole new onboarding flow to the Sing King Karaoke app, streamlining particular areas and also adding new features to enhance the user experience. We also had a complete renovation of the premium model, with a new pricing structure and new offerings.  

This has been achieved by: 


  • Researching market competitors and interviewing users. Conducting research on other singing / Karaoke / mobile applications and also with Sing King users to determine any pain points and necessary improvements. 



  • Defining the goals and creating solid hypotheses. This helps to focus on the goal at hand, and it’s great to avoid scope creep. Great to define a robust MVP.



  • Exploring and testing solutions with real users. Concept testing and usability testing to answer two vital questions: Is this a good user experience? and Does this solve the problem/meet the need?

The Problem

The company identified a need to enhance crucial business metrics by introducing and developing key features. Specifically, there was a requirement to improve onboarding and the core user journey to boost sign-ups and user retention rates, as well as improving the conversion of users from free accounts to paid premium accounts.

Defining a potential solution

The solution involves streamlining the current user journey for onboarding into a much better experience whilst at the same time gathering more information about the user to create a tailored Karaoke experience. Also, changing the pricing structure.


The solution would be to create a streamline, intuitive and engaging onboarding experience to ultimately increase sign-ups.

Onboarding Improvements: Implemented enhancements to the onboarding process, streamlining the user experience and reducing friction points to make it easier for new users to sign up and get started.



Core User Journey Enhancements: Identified key touch points within the core user journey and introduced improvements to enhance user satisfaction and encourage continued engagement with the platform.



Premium Upgrade Strategy: Developed and implemented a revamped premium upgrade strategy, offering compelling incentives and benefits to encourage users to upgrade to premium subscriptions.

Research & Analysis

Conducted an analysis of the popular onboarding methodologies to identify trends, preferences, and successful sign-up enticements.

My learnings were that most successful onboarding procedures were very simple and intuitive, with a focus on user experience - particularly making the sign-up as quick and painless as possible to remove any barriers for users.

From the user research, I was able to identify key areas in which the majority of users would deem pain points and therefore outline the main user journey we would need to focus on.


Market Analysis: Conducted an in-depth analysis of the market landscape to identify industry trends and best practices regarding user onboarding and retention strategies.



User Journey Mapping: Utilised user journey mapping techniques to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement in the onboarding process and core user experience.



Competitor Analysis: Studied competitors' approaches to onboarding and user retention to gain insights into effective strategies and potential areas for differentiation.

Developing the Product

Prototyping: Created prototypes and wireframes to visualise the onboarding and pain points, user interface, and overall user experience. These prototypes were used to present to board members and other key stakeholders, and also used in initial qualitative testing direct with users.

Design and Implementation: Worked closely with developers to bring the new onboarding & premium upgrade to life, ensuring that it meets the desired specifications and aligns with the app's overall design language and branding. The new onboarding mode had to seamlessly integrate into the current app ecosystem and improve the user journey and sign-up rates.

UI Exploration

The onboarding user journey was completely revamped, making it much quicker and straightforward for the user. We also implemented an additional screen to enhance the user experience by providing the user with options to select favourite artists, which would in turn create a more customised and personal Karaoke experience.

In addition to developing this new onboarding flow, we also introduced an enhanced upgrade to premium screen. This screen showcased the tariffs in a much more user friendly manner and utilised colours and a carousel to display premium features in a much more appealing manner.

Validating the solution

We used various methods to validate the solution, all of which were cross-examined and analysed using real world data.

A/B Testing: Conducted A/B testing to compare the performance of the new onboarding process and core user journey enhancements against the previous versions, gathering data on user behaviour and conversion rates.

User Feedback: Solicited feedback from users through surveys, interviews, and feedback forms to gauge their satisfaction with the new features and improvements, as well as to identify any areas for further refinement.

Performance Monitoring: Monitored key metrics such as sign-up rates, user retention rates, and revenue generation to track the impact of the implemented changes over time.

Rollout Strategy

Gradual Rollout: Implemented the new features and improvements gradually, starting with a small subset of users to monitor performance and gather feedback before rolling them out to a wider audience.

User Education: Provided users with information and guidance on the new features and improvements through in-app tutorials, notifications, and help resources to ensure a smooth transition and optimal usage.

Feedback Integration: Continuously iterated and refined the features based on user feedback and performance data, addressing any issues or areas for improvement that were identified during the implementation process.

Impact

Significant Increase in Sign-ups: The improvements to the onboarding process resulted in a substantial increase in sign-up rates, rising from 12% to 70%, indicating greater ease of use and effectiveness in capturing user interest.

Dramatic Improvement in User Retention: User retention rates surged from 30% to over 80% following the enhancements to the core user journey, demonstrating increased user satisfaction and engagement with the platform.

Substantial Revenue Growth: The revamped premium upgrade strategy led to a remarkable fivefold increase in revenue, as more users were incentivised to upgrade to premium subscriptions, attracted by the enhanced value proposition and benefits.

This comprehensive case study illustrates how the introduction and development of key features, focusing on onboarding improvements and core user journey enhancements, had a profound impact on crucial business metrics, including sign-ups, user retention, and revenue generation.

  • User retention from 30% to 80%
